Hi, I'm Fleur!
One of the things I love most about being a celebrant is listening to people's stories. I've always been curious about what matters to people, the relationships that shape them, and the beliefs, values and experiences that make each life unique.
Through personal experience and many years supporting children and families, I've learned how powerful it is to feel welcomed, accepted, valued and included, especially during life's important transitions. This understanding is at the centre of my celebrancy work.
People often describe me as calm, caring and creative. I love meaningful conversations, exploring connections between people and ideas, and helping people to feel comfortable being and expressing themselves.
As a celebrant, I create warm, thoughtful and deeply personal ceremonies that help people celebrate love, honour loss, welcome change and mark life's important milestones. To me, ceremony offers a beautiful opportunity to pause, reflect on what matters most, and connect with the people we love, our deepest values, and something greater than ourselves.
At the heart of everything I do is the belief that each unique life deserves to be treasured and celebrated, and that when we take the time to honour one another, we bring a little more love, connection and meaning into the world.
My Story, My Beliefs
I was born and raised in South Africa to a Cornish father and a Scottish mother. Growing up between different cultures and traditions gave me an early appreciation of how differently people experience the world, and sparked a lifelong interest in what helps us feel connected, accepted and at home.
I have now lived in Scotland more than half my life and I love being beside the beautiful coast in East Lothian with its wide open spaces. Nature has always been an important part of who I am. I find peace in wide skies, joy in the crash of the waves and wonder almost everywhere outdoors. It is where I feel most grounded and most connected to something greater than myself, and to the sense of love, connection and belonging that weaves through all of life.
For more than thirty years, I worked with children and families as a volunteer, parent, nursery practitioner and primary teacher. The work closest to my heart was the decade I spent supporting children and families to overcome barriers to participation, whether through language differences, additional support needs, bereavement or difficult life circumstances.
Those experiences taught me something I carry into every ceremony: everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and to feel welcomed, included and valued.
Along the way, I kept being nudged towards celebrancy.
My first experience of working with a celebrant was at my own wedding. My husband and I chose a small ceremony at home, surrounded by our closest family. Together we selected readings, music and vows that reflected who we were and the heart of our relationship. What made the day unforgettable wasn't its size or setting, but the feeling that it truly belonged to us.
Then, years later, when my brother died suddenly, I experienced a very different kind of ceremony. During the shock and sadness that followed, I was deeply grateful for the calm support of our celebrant. Delivering my brother's eulogy was one of the most difficult and meaningful moments of my life. As his stories made us laugh, cry and recognise the person we loved, I felt the comfort that comes from gathering together to share memories, honour a life and celebrate the love that remains.
Those two ceremonies showed me the power of creating moments that genuinely reflect the people at their centre. At their best, ceremonies help us express love, navigate change, honour loss and celebrate what matters most. They can also help us connect with the beliefs, values, traditions and relationships that give our lives meaning, whatever those may be.
As I have always been interested in learning about different people’s perspectives, my beliefs continue to evolve, but they are grounded in kindness, compassion, community and connection. I believe there is something greater than ourselves that links us to one another, to the natural world and to the people we love. I don't pretend to have all the answers, and I find comfort in that mystery and in the values shared by many spiritual, philosophical and religious traditions, which focus on love, respect, acceptance and care for others.
Above all, I believe that every life has value and every story deserves to be heard. I feel incredibly privileged to hear people's stories and work alongside them to create ceremonies that reflect who they are. My hope is that those I work with leave feeling seen, valued and supported, carrying memories that bring comfort, joy and connection long after the ceremony has ended.
