Can you wear a kilt if you’re not Scottish?
There’s only one answer to that and it’s… Aye!!!
Yesterday I got an email from one of my international couples, saying the groom really wants to wear a kilt at his wedding ceremony in Glencorse Auld Kirk in May, but doesn’t know if it’s appropriate because he’s not Scottish.
For a start everybody is a wee bit Scottish, and secondly, I don’t know anyone who would be offended by a non-scot wearing a kilt. No true Scot would see someone wearing a kilt as cultural appropriation. Instead we see it as cultural appreciation! I’ve had ceremonies where people from all over the world… China, India, USA, Canada, Italy, South Africa have worn kilts and the one thing they have in common is that they all look amazing!
So if you want to wear a kilt, do it!
Just be warned!… if you wear it the wrong way, we’ll throw you oot on yer haggis loving behind!! (It should hang just overlapping the top of your kneecap and sitting in the crease of the back of your knee)
So get yer kilt on and wear it well!
